The Square Knot is one of the essential knots on the list because of its simplicity and the amount of uses this knot will work for. If you are tying two lengths of rope or lashing( Over the same width ) the square knot is a good choice. When you secure it with an overhand knot it will not release when not under tension and will hold pretty much until the rope snaps. The square knot is used for tying down items that do not need to be moved around or accessible, such as canteen pouches, and anything that will be in one place on your FLC.
Just Remember Right over Left – Left over Right. Or X over Y, Y over X to show that it can be done whether you start with right or left first.
Or X over Y, Y over X to show that it can be done whether you start with right or left first.
Caution: This knot needs to be secured to itself or tie overhand knots so that it does not come undone.
**You will need to get used to how this knot looks when tying paracord to itself. It looks slightly different but if you can follow the 2 sections in and under then you did the knot correctly**
